Why we wrote it
Buyers stopped starting at Google. Half of B2B software buyers now open their research with an AI chatbot more often than with a search engine, up from 29% a year earlier. The question for a demand team is no longer where you rank. It's whether the model names you when a buyer asks.
How it was sourced
This is an aggregation report. TurboDemand did not run a proprietary panel for this edition. Instead we pulled the strongest published measurements from 2025 and 2026 and put them in one place, weighted toward primary studies with disclosed sample sizes.
Sources fall into three buckets:
- Search-behavior clickstream: Semrush (10M+ keywords), SparkToro.
- Citation and crawl analysis: Ahrefs (863K keyword result pages, 4M cited URLs), AirOps (21,311 brand mentions across GPT-5, Claude Sonnet 4.5, and Perplexity), Profound (680M+ citations, August 2024 to June 2025).
- Buyer surveys: G2's B2B software buyer research and 6sense's 2025 Buyer Experience Report (4,000+ buyers).
Where two credible sources disagree, we say so rather than pick the flattering number. AI-chatbot market-share figures are the clearest example, and we treat them below as a caution about method, not a leaderboard.
A note on Gartner's widely-cited forecast that traditional search volume would fall 25% by 2026. It's a prediction, not a measurement, and it drew informed skepticism when it landed. We cite it as a directional marker, and lean on the measured clickstream data for anything load-bearing.
