AI Overview (Google)

An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google places above its normal search results, pulling several sources into one answer with citations.

For a lot of queries Google now opens with a summary instead of a list. It reads across a handful of pages, writes a direct answer, and links the sources it leaned on. For the person searching, that summary is often the whole visit: it sits at the top, above the first ordinary result.

It's Google's take on the shift already underway in ChatGPT and Perplexity, where the search box has quietly turned into an answer box. What makes the Overview matter more than the rest is sheer reach. It shows up inside the search product hundreds of millions of people open every day, so for most brands this is where the change first bites.

Being in that summary matters even if you rank first the old-fashioned way, because the ranked list now sits below it. If a competitor is cited and you aren't, you've lost the top of the page no matter how well your blue link is doing. And because the summary so often answers the question outright, it's one of the main engines of zero-click search.

Earning a spot in one comes down to the same AEO habits that work elsewhere: answer plainly and early, keep the page clean and marked up with schema so Google can lift your answer, and build the source authority that makes it trust and corroborate you in the first place. Search "how does X work" and you'll often get an Overview citing three sources before a single link, at which point the results underneath barely get read.
