Zero-Click Search

A zero-click search is one that ends without a click. The user gets the answer on the results page itself, or in the AI's reply, and never visits a site.

The searcher asks and the engine answers on the spot. Whether it's a Google AI Overview, an old-style featured snippet, or a Perplexity reply, the question gets resolved without anyone landing on a source. The click that used to justify the whole ranking game just never happens.

None of this is brand new. Snippets and knowledge panels started chipping away at clicks years ago. What AI answers changed is the scale of it, because a written summary can put a complex, multi-part question to bed in a way a one-line snippet never could.

The awkward part is what it does to your definition of success. In a click-driven world, being quoted without a visit felt like a loss, since the traffic didn't move. Now, being the cited source of a zero-click answer is often the best outcome on offer, because that's the moment a buyer forms a view of you. Teams still anchored to sessions and clicks can look at flat traffic and completely miss that their brand is shaping answers it gets no analytics credit for.

The way out is to stop measuring clicks alone. Track how often you're cited, which is exactly what citation share exists for, and make sure the clicks you do still earn land on a page built to capture that intent rather than fizzle. Someone reads an Overview's cited answer and never visits the source. The brand logged no session, but it was the source that buyer read and trusted, which a click-only scorecard records as nothing at all.
